Powys County Councillor William Powell is in a stable condition in hospital after displaying symptoms of the coronavirus.

He was admitted to Neville Hall Hospital in Abergavenny presenting symptoms of COVID 19 – coronavirus infection on Thursday, March 26.

On admission he was immediately transferred to intensive care and placed on a ventilator.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats, who Cllr Powell represents, say that the latest news they have is that his condition remains stable but he is ‘poorly’.

Cllr James Watts, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Group at Powys County Council, said: “As a council group we have known about his condition throughout his illness and have wished that our much-valued and well-loved colleague be allowed to fight the illness in a private manner.

“We are in regular touch with his family and would ask media and well-wishers to give them the space that they need in these most difficult circumstances.

“We will release further statements as appropriate.”

A number of politicians took to social media to wish the Talgarth councillor a full recovery.

Brecon and Radnorshire Assembly Member Kirsty Williams said: "I ,the Welsh Lib Dem family and many many others are holding William, his wife and boys in our thoughts and prayers at this time. This virus can affect anyone."

Jane Dodds, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said she is "devastated" by the news.

"I am devastated to hear about Bill’s condition, my thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this testing time.

"We know he is getting the best possible care from our resilient and hard working healthcare staff and hope he makes a full and swift recovery soon."
