A FLINTSHIRE resident has taken it upon himself to help the most vulnerable during the coronavirus outbreak.

Darren Morris, from New Brighton, explained how a recent visit to his local store resulted in him creating basic care packages for the elderly and the less fortunate within his community, who were left without during to the recent panic buying.

He said: "Whilst I was wondering around, I heard a little old lady ask if they had any toilet roll and when she was told, ‘I’m afraid not sorry’, she began to tell the attendant how desperate she was as she had ran out.

"This made me very angry as there have been so many people bulk buying without any consideration for the less fortunate, who may not be able to afford to do so.

"This was just one vulnerable person but I knew there would hundreds, if not thousands more."

That evening, Mr Morris put out an appeal via Facebook to ask for donations, as well as sending letters to the community of New Brighton, in order to collect enough items such as toilet roll and other basic items to give to those in need, whilst also attempting to raise spirits and to bring people together.

He added: "I was overwhelmed by the response and the amount of stuff that was donated by so many caring people in our community.

"I have so far been able to deliver six care packages and everyone of them were very thankful, one lady even called me an angel.

"I thank her, but that is not why I and many others from other communities are doing this.

"We want to look after our neighbours and help them through this very hard time.

"I would like to thank everyone that has donated so far and would appeal that if anyone can donate further, so that we can make sure we have enough supplies moving forward, I would really appreciate it.

"And as I have mentioned to the residents of New Brighton, let’s follow Italy’s approach of isolation and where possible sing, dance and keep community spirit alive in a safe way."

Mr Morris is now working with the 'Nanny Biscuit' group, in order to not cross paths and to offer the best for their communities.

He also stated that he is aware that demand is likely to increase and at present, they are working with a small amount of volunteers, so any extra help would be greatly appreciated.
