SEVERAL community groups and businesses on Anglesey have started initiatives to assist the vulnerable and elderly while they are in self-isolation due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Menter Môn, and the council volunteer service, Medrwn Môn, are co-ordinating support and many local businesses who have been instructed to close are assisting with preparing hot meals supplied through Anglesey Foodbank.

Teams of many volunteers have been helping community pharmacies deliver vital medicines to those alone and with no support.

Member of Parliament for Ynys Môn, Virginia Crosbie, who co- ordinated a medicine delivery session last week for Valley Pharmacy (sign below), said the community has showed an amazing level of compassion.

North Wales Chronicle:

She added: “I am very touched by the amount of people who are signing up to help in this effort and would urge others to do the same. From delivering vital supplies to helping people with food shopping, those who have no family or friends really need our help now more than ever.

“People shouldn’t be forced to choose between risking getting the virus by going out or getting food to eat, and so I’m determined that those of us who can play our part,”

Hundreds of people have already volunteered to help local hospitals should they require support. The drive to recruit, train, and deploy 250,000 volunteers to aid the NHS during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak has been welcomed by Mrs Crosbie, who is also Parliamentary Private Secretary to UK Health Ministers, but she has called on the Welsh Government to introduce the scheme to Wales.

The drive, launched by Matt Hancock – the UK Government’s Health Secretary – will see at least a quarter of a million people from all walks of life in the UK helping out where they can.

Mr Crosbie added: “We are facing an unprecedented challenge, a challenge which so many people in our communities are stepping up to assist with. Working as PPS to UK Health Ministers, I have been amazed by the willingness for people to help each other.

“This is most evident this week, where 405,000 people have signed up to the NHS Volunteer Scheme in England to help with the fight against COVID-19 and save as many lives as possible.

“It would be really great if the Welsh Government would agree to use the NHS UK scheme already set up. There are so many amazing people on Anglesey ready and waiting to play their part."
