A SQUAD of young Colwyn Bay athletes came home with a string of medals from the North Wales Junior Athletics championships.

The youngsters, all members of the town’s athletics club, competed in the 200 metres and 600 metres races in the championships held at Sportcity, Manchester.

Crispin Backshall, the club’s coach said: “I am extremely proud of all the athletes who have trained hard all the way through the winter, despite the weather, to achieve this fantastic set of results. They really put their backs into it and showed great commitment.

“We are now, as a club looking forward to the coming track season starting in May, and we are preparing hard for this.”

The club trains at the track in Eirias Park on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 7pm and is open to youngsters aged from eight upwards.

In the 200 metres Gold medal winners were: Chike Iwobi, Kane Smart, James Joy, Megan Hughes and Amelie Roberts; Silver medals: Zac Hay, Cristie De Giorgio; Bronze : Jacob Edghill and Aimee Vaughan.

In the 600 metres Gold medal winners were: Niamh Merrison, Louis Cooper and Ella Grundy; Silver medals: Amelie Roberts and Mia Morris ; Bronze Medal: Aimee Vaughan.

The club also scored well at the Junior Cross country championships at Pembrey, South Wales. Bryn Woodall and James Smith performed exceptionally well. Bryn was placed fourth in the under 17 category securing a place in the London Mini Marathon in May and James was placed 16th in the under 16 category.
