Climate change activists across Wales will stage a series of demonstrations near Shell service stations including Menai Bridge to highlight what they are calling fake fuel claims.

The members of Extinction Rebellion Activists will peacefully demonstrate near the Mona Road garage from around 11am today (Saturday February 29).

The demonstration will include a theatrical "die in" by XR Youth and a washing line of “greenwashing” to draw the public's attention to Shell’s alleged greenwashing, or fake news spreading of the seriousness of the climate crisis and the need to tell the truth about it according to the group.

The world’s largest energy company is urging motorists to drive “carbon neutral’ by buying GO+ fuel agreeing to spend £10 million on carbon offsetting over the next year.

XR claim the offset amounts to 0.0033 per cent of Shell's $388 BILLION global revenue.

An Extinction Rebellion spokesperson said: “We’re taking non-disruptive action today, not to inconvenience everyday people, but to ensure they know the truth behind Shell’s claims. We don’t believe global businesses like Shell care. They are still the problem not the solution.

"Offsetting provides the illusion of taking action to stop global warming when in fact they often allow emissions to rise. At a time when our planet, the human species and all life on earth is facing a Climate & Ecological Emergency, this token gesture and PR opportunity from Shell is insulting to the public and all those who are suffering on the front line of the climate & environmental changes we are facing.

"Shell’s claim relies on the purchase of international carbon offsetting credits. This is not a proven or reliable means of reducing overall carbon emissions. Carbon offsetting will not deliver the net zero future that the science tells us we need to achieve by 2030."
