PLAID Cymru's Member of Parliament for Arfon Hywel Williams will host a "high-level" meeting with North Wales Police following pressing concerns about anti-social behaviour in Caernarfon.

The meeting requested by Mr Williams, comes after police recently imposed a 48-hour dispersal order in the town to curb anti-social behaviour, prompted by an incident at the local KFC outlet.

Mr Williams will press North Wales Police on what active steps are being taken to deal with the situation and what is being done to support and encourage young people away from such behaviour.

Hywel Williams MP said: "First of all, a strong and robust message needs to go out to those involved that this behaviour is not acceptable.

‘I have requested an urgent meeting with north Wales Police to convey my concerns and those of the wider Caernarfon community. Local people need to be reassured that tackling this issue is a priority for the police.

"We need concerted pressure and partner organisations working together to find a long-term, practical solution to this pressing issue and I’m aware that positive, multi-agency discussions are already taking place.

"Improving access to youth services is essential. Raising the aspirations of young people in the area and encouraging them lead crime-free lives must be a priority.

"Whilst there is much the police can do on the ground, the root causes of anti-social behaviour must be addressed if we are to curb the problem.

"We are indebted to local charities such as GISDA, based in the centre of Caernarfon, who provide support and opportunities for young people, but the work youth workers do is restricted by limited funding.

"Caernarfon is a bustling town, attracting thousands of visitors each year. It has benefited from the continued hard work of the Town Council and Hwb Caernarfon, and I’m sure we’d all like to see this positive image continue.’

"If we are to clamp down on anti-social behaviour amongst young people we need to work together to discourage such behaviour but more importantly, look at prevention measures with children, young people and families, especially with those which are vulnerable or at risk.’

Similar instances of anti-social behaviour occurred at an address on Farrar Road, Bangor just days after the Caernarfon incident.

Police issued a 48-hour dispersal order in that area.
