A DECOMMISSIONED fire engine from Cumbria is on its way 3,000 miles to West Africa.
The Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service appliance used by retained firefighters is still in working order but has come to the end of its service after 20 years.
Janet Willis, the council’s cabinet member for the fire service, said the Coniston-based vehicle would be donated to a region in The Gambia.
The appliance will serve the Kotu area, a major tourism resort, which has been struggling with an ‘older and increasingly unreliable’ appliance. Watch manager William Watson arranged for the engine to be shipped over to after visiting a fire station while on holiday.
