A man has been killed in a road accident on Friday.

The victim, aged 55, died when he was hit by a vehicle near the village primary school in Shobdon, Herefordshire, just a few miles outside the Powys border.

The B4362 through the village was closed for several hours, but has now re-opened.

A 23-year-old man from Hereford has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police Sergeant Ian Brogan said: “Emergency services were called this morning at 6.15am following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a white Vauxhall Corsa near to Shobdon Primary School in Shobdon, Leominster.

“The pedestrian, a 55-year-old local man, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been spoken with and our thoughts are with them at this very sad time.

The school village school remained open throughout the day, though access was restricted.

Catherine Owen, who is staying at Pearl Lake Leisure Park near the village, said: “I was shocked to learn of such a huge tragedy in such a small village."

Others in the village, who declined to be named, told of a tight-knit community shocked by the day's tragedy.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it received several 999 calls reporting the accident and wo ambulances, a paramedic officer and a doctor from Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS) were sent to the scene.

"Ambulance staff arrived to find bystanders and police administering CPR to a pedestrian following the collision," a spokeswoman said.

"Ambulance staff took over resuscitation efforts and continued administering advanced life support to the pedestrian, a man, on scene.

"Sadly, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead on scene a short time later."
