A former councillor’s bid to open a Deli on one of Caernarfon’s busiest streets has been approved by planners.

Endaf Cooke, who served on Gwynedd Council between 2010 and 2017, had applied for permission to convert a former convenience store on Pool Street into a deli and sandwich shop with internal seating.

Mr Cooke, who operates the J+C fish and chip shop next door, successfully obtained permission for the change of use after officers approved the bid without the need to go in front of the planning committee.

According to the planning documents, the proposal is expected to create three full-time and two part-time jobs.

Officers, in their report, noted:  “The proposal is for the change of use of the ground floor of a residential unit from A1 to A3 deli / sandwich shop with a sit-in area.

“The unit has recently become used as a convenience store. The area in which the application is located includes a variety of different businesses which include hot food takeaways, miscellaneous shopping, pubs, estate agents, banks, bookmakers etc. and therefore the proposal is considered to be in keeping with  adjacent land uses.

“It is noted that the unit which is the subject of this application has been vacant for some time, and there are a number of other vacant shops around the town.”
