A DEADLINE to nominate people for awards that recognise the self-less work of volunteers in Wrexham has been extended.

The Marjorie Dykins OBE Volunteer Memorial Awards, which offer two awards with a prize of £500, now has a deadline of 12pm on Monday, November 11.

The awards are designed to recognise and encourage the valuable work that volunteer’s carry out in their local communities.

Chair of AVOW John Leece-Jones recently presented the Mayor of Wrexham, Councillor Rob Walsh, with a Volunteer Star Awards certificate for the one millon hours that volunteers in general have contributed to good causes across Wrexham County Borough in the last 10 years.

Previous Volunteer Memorial awards have been presented to Georgie Adams for her continued support of the homeless community and her work with Project Home, and Hayley Williams for her work supporting families and establishing a local Nappy Library in Gwersyllt.

In 2018, the group award was presented to Gwenfro Valley Parents Steering Group for their support of the Gwenfro Valley Adventure Playground by raising funds, acquiring equipment and co-ordinating events for the children and young people of the area.

Marjorie Dykins OBE, previously lived in Garden Village, and founded the first playgroup in Wrexham in the 1950’s. She was a founding trustee and Secretary of AVOW, Home-Start and Family Friends and made a significant contribution to a wide range of other organisations/groups both locally and nationally.

The awards were set up in 2016 by AVOW in her memory, following consultation with Marjorie’s family.

The closing date for the submission of nominations is 12pm on Monday, November 11 and the winners will be announced and presented with their awards at the AVOW Christmas Reception to be held at the Catrin Finch Centre, Glyndwr University, Wrexham on Friday, December 13, 2019.
