A LLANGEFNI roofer has been fined after being found guilty of overcharging for work and for charging for work he didn't carry out.

Gwynedd Council’s Trading Standards Service brought a successful case against

Chris Evans, of Chris’s Roofing and Property Maintenance.

He admitted the charges at Caernarfon Magistrates Court on October 2. He was fined £615 on both charges, ordered to pay costs of £1,932, compensation of £450 and a victim surcharge of £61.

The court heard that Chris Evans, of Llys Tregarnedd, Llangefni, was to repair the conservatory roof on a property in Caernarfon at a cost of £700.

While the work was being carried out, the roofer drew the owners’ attention to other repairs required on the building, at a further cost of £450.

However, some time later, damp patches appeared near where the work had been carried out.

Mr Evans ,of Chris’s Roofing and Property Maintenance, promised to visit to inspect the work, the court heard.

When he failed to attend, a complaint was made to Gwynedd Council’s Trading Standards Unit.

The court was told that Council inspectors found that the agreed work had not been carried out, though it had been paid for.

The investigation also showed that the additional work carried out should not have cost more than £100.

Following the hearing, Councillor Gareth Griffith, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for Trading Standards, said that the case, and the fine handed down, should act as a warning to others.

He said: “The action of rogue traders can have a significant financial and emotional impact on consumers, particularly the most vulnerable members of our communities.

"This result is testament to the hard work of the Council’s Trading Standards officers and to our commitment to protecting the health, safety and economic wellbeing of Gwynedd residents.”
