A REMARKABLE lady who returned to studying in her 80s became a queen for the day as she celebrated her 106th birthday.

Edith Parker, who lives at Bradshaw Manor Care Home in Rhyl, was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as she received a telegram from the Queen in recognition of her milestone.

The home also held a tea party, for which Edith wore a crown.

Mrs Parker carried out an online 'open university' course connected with politics in her 80s.

Mrs Parker opted for the course as she felt she needed something ‘to keep her going’.

The birthday girl - who wore a crown and requested a pink theme for her birthday - said her secret to reaching 106 is happiness and good company.

Emma Crompton, activities co-ordinator of Barchester Bradshaw Manor, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman as she reaches this amazing birthday.

“Edith is a lovely lady who always has an interesting tale to tell. She constantly has a smile on her face and is kind and friendly with everyone.

“She is just so friendly and smiley. She can be sarcastic but in a funny way.

“She is lovely and she gets on with everyone.”

The former cook, originally from Camberwell in South East London, was married to the late Fred, whom she described as the love of her life.

She has lived in the Rhyl area since 1983.

Her birthday was October 5.
