TWO young entrepreneurs responsible for setting up a thriving t-shirt enterprise on Anglesey recently scooped a prestigious prize at the North Wales Young Business Awards.

The Llanfairpwll duo of Sion Emlyn Davies, 19, and Sion Owen, 19, initially set up Arfordir (Coast) as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate requirements whilst in the Sixth Form at Ysgol David Hughes, Menai Bridge.

However, the pair’s t-shirt creations quickly developed into a popular feature amongst fellow pupils and subsequently grew into an actual business.

Arfordir itself does not currently have a website, instead it chooses to promote through social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Since it formed in 2017, it has garnered support from the likes of Springwatch presenter Iolo Williams and Wales rugby star Rhys Patchell.

Speaking on being handed the 'Public Choice Award' at the ceremony at Bangor University on September 28, Sion Emlyn said: "Winning this award just goes to show that young people in North Wales can create and run a successful business.

"We started up Arfordir as part of a Welsh Baccalaureate project when we were at school. We thought 'let's do something easy like start a t-shirt business'.

"The name we came up with represents Anglesey as we're surrounded by the Arfordir (Coast), then we created a relevant logo and stuck it on a t-shirt.

"Pupils loved them so much that we began to realise that we could really make something of this. We are delighted to have won our award. We never thought that something which started out as a bit of homework at school could turn into being such a success for us."

Sion Emlyn added that Arfordir are now looking to bring in more stock and develop a further range of items of clothing.
