ANGLESEY'S Assembly Member Rhun ap Iorwerth has pressed the Welsh Government for answers regarding the expected closure of the island's Marco Cable Management site.

Mr ap Iorwerth says the Welsh Government "must act quickly and decisively" following the announcement of Marco Cable Management’s potential closure in Llangefni.

He raised concerns over the string of announcements regarding job losses on Anglesey during 2019 - including the REHAU site in Amlwch.

In a Topical Question to Welsh Government Minister for the Economy, Ken Skates last week, the AM expressed his disappointment and surprise regarding the announcement and expressed sympathy for the affected workers and their families.

“I was truly disappointed to hear this news – we are talking about good jobs with a company that we thought had a sustainable presence in Llangefni. Not long ago I was discussing with the company their plans to possibly expand the site at Llangefni.

“Now we’re talking about losing jobs and my thoughts are with the 40 staff who are faced with potentially losing their jobs, and the families of those workers as well.

“Although there is talk of offering alternative employment at another site in West Bromwich, firstly there won’t be many who can or will want to take up that offer, and secondly we don’t want people to have to move out of their communities to secure work.”

Mr ap Iorwerth added that recent job losses in the region should be of great concern.

The Plaid Cymru AM added: “This was a company rooted on Anglesey, established in 2003. We saw with Rehau in Amlwch, another company which had been a very good employer locally, deciding to pull out at a whim. This vulnerability is something that should be of huge concern to all."
