Community radio station MônFM has been shortlisted in the annual national Community Radio Awards for the second year running.

The community station for Anglesey and North West Wales made the shortlist in three different categories, after more than 425 entries were received.

MônFM has been nominated in the Speech & Journalism category – for news coverage of the decision to suspend Wylfa Newydd; Sports Show category - MônFM Sport; and Volunteer of the year – Gareth Joy, Head of News and Sport / Friday Drivetime Presenter.

Tony Wyn Jones, MônFM’s chairman said: “We’re delighted that the station has been shortlisted two years in succession. We sincerely wish Gareth Joy the best of luck with this year’s nominations – he’s worked so hard to prepare over 600 separate bulletins, along with newsflashes and special assignments. He’s been the main anchor on MônFM Sport, and is always an enthusiastic commentator at local football matches. However, his best work to date was heard by listeners all over Europe when we covered the Inter Island Games football tournament – which attracted record listening figures for MônFM.”

“Local news is an important part of what we do at MônFM. We work hard to keep our listeners up to date every day on air and on social media, and we’re also proud to see that the ‘MônFM Update’ team have also been nominated for their hard work with extended coverage of the Wylfa Newydd suspension. ”

Gareth Joy, who has worked at local radio stations in North Wales for over a decade, said: “I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved over the past 12 months. We’ve been building our commitment to local news and sport - especially since we launched our daily bulletins in September last year – and to be recognised for our work by the community radio sector is fantastic.’’

“We take sport seriously on MônFM, whether it’s providing a local results service on Saturdays or live match commentaries on big Welsh Cup games, and of course, the unforgettable Inter Island Games football. Clubs across the region value what we do - just as much as our listeners – and we always strive to go a step further and deliver an even better service.’’

Martin Steers, awards chair, said: "Now in their third year, the entries are getting better and better, and we’re really able to show off the diverse broadcasting that the countries stations undertake for the benefit of their communities. Every year I continue to be proud by the quality of the submissions and what they represent, the fantastic work that our community radio stations do in their communities.”

“We wish MônFM good luck and can’t wait to host the UK ceremony in Barry in October 2019.”
