A PURPLE push to promote a project to eradicate Polio is happening across Anglesey and Gwynedd.

As part of a global campaign, the Bangor Rotary Club, is organising its second ‘Light up the Menai Strait Purple.’

The Bangor Rotarians have been “delighted” by the number of hotels, businesses and private households from Caernarfon Castle to Beaumaris Castle participating in this year's initiative to light up properties in purple. They are now calling for more people to take part, and in other ways.

Packs have gone out to Bangor, Beaumaris and Menai Bridge schools offering to lead assembly presentations and seeking young people's ideas on boosting the campaign.

Some schools, such as our Lady’s RC Primary School in Bangor, which previously raised £100 for the campaign, are taking part in a ‘wear something purple non-uniform day,’ on World Polio Day, October 24, to raise funds for immunisation programmes in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the last two countries where Polio is still endemic, and where Rotary teams are in action.

Elvis impersonator Rev Wyn Roberts is donating a performance at The Victoria Hotel, Menai Bridge, at 7.15pm, on Friday October 25.

Pontio’s cinema will donate a special showing of the award winning film ‘Breathe’, (starring Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Hugh Bonneville and Tom Hollander) at 3.15pm, October 18. It is a true story about Robin Cavendish, by paralysed by polio at the age of 28.

A multi-faith service to support the ‘End Polio Now’ initiative is at 5pm, at Bangor Cathedral, on Sunday, October 20. The Cathedral will be illuminated in purple and school children will take part in a service of support open to the community.

Bangor Rotarians have also been sponsored by Richard Boyce of Snowdonia Tree Services, and are now wear purple hi-viz jackets.

The club's press officer Pauline Kenyon said: “We would love to hear from schools, clubs, organisations or the community who could help in any way, big or small, or who is willing to decorate a window purple for the event or has other interesting ideas!"
