STAFF of a care-home embarked on a hike up Snowdonia to help raise money for a project at their site in Wrexham.

Workers at the Plas Rhosnesni Nursing Home on Cefn Road decided to take on the enormous challenge in order to generate funds to transform an unused outdoor area into a new garden for the residents.

They were also joined by students from Coleg Cambria and Leonard Cheshire.

Back in August, a group of young people, along with residents and staff, dug out and did up an outdoor area at the nursing home, and painted the back fence with Wrexham landmarks to help with the memory of those living with dementia.

However, the home is not resting on its laurels, and staff now want to develop another outdoor area at the site.

Olivia Williams of Plas Rhosnesni Nursing Home said: “We wanted to raise money for the home to create a festival-themed sensory garden.

“We thought we’d try and take on as big of a challenge as possible, so we decided to climb Snowdonia.

“The first garden has been a big success so far and it’s because of that, that we want to kick on and give the residents more space to enjoy the outside, where they can enjoy some quiet time and reflect.”

Sue Williams of Plas Rhosnesni Nursing Home added: “We did the climb up Snowdonia on Sunday September 22 and we think that we’ve raised between £800 and £900 so far but people can still donate.

“It was very tough, the weather was atrocious, and we were all blue by the end of it, but we all managed to do it and it was all worth it.

“It’s been very important to us to involve younger people in this whole process as well, as it gives underprivileged kids the chance to be a part of something and give them an opportunity to see something big that they achieved.

“A couple of the kids who got involved with the first garden enjoyed themselves so much that they’re wanting to get in care-working now, and they’ve actually got placements here.”
