A MOTHER who wanted to “put a smile on her children’s faces” for a birthday had stolen from shops despite attending a thinking skills course, a court has heard.

Kelly Bates, 31, of Cybi Close, Holyhead, received a 20 weeks suspended jail term and must pay £55 compensation and £207 costs.

She was told by magistrates’ chairman Paul Kinsey at Llandudno court :”This is the last chance saloon.” Bates admitted four thefts and possessing amphetamine.

Prosecutor Rhian Jackson said she stole clothes worth £38 from New Look at Holyhead, and also targeted Coop, Home Bargains and Poundland stores. Some items were recovered.

Andrew Scott, defending, said Bates, on benefit, had previous convictions for theft and a “troubled” background. But she had made “significant” strides to stabilise her life.

A probation officer said the defendant had been feeling desperate. It was a child’s birthday and her main priority had been to put a smile on her children’s faces.
