PROSECUTORS are waiting to verify the cause of death of a camper at a Gwynedd site before charging a man with causing death by dangerous driving.

Jake Waterhouse, of Hazel Walk, Partington in Greater Manchester has already admitted causing serious injury to Anna Roselyn Evans after a car crashed into tents at the Rhyd Y Galen camp site in Bethel, near Caernarfon, on August 19.

Ms Evans, 46, a mother-of-two from the Aberystwyth area, died in hospital in Stoke eight days later.

Waterhouse, 27, appeared before Mold Crown Court on Monday, where Judge Rhys Rowlands was told that the medical cause of Ms Evans’ death needs to be confirmed before the more serious charge was put to Waterhouse, which it was said, he is prepared to admit.

Prosecuting barrister Sion Ap Mihangel said: “Medical evidence is not available yet that establishes the cause of death is the result of the driving.

“It is unfortunate as the defendant has indicated that he will accept the amendment to the charge.”

When he appeared at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court prosecutor Gareth Parry outlined how Waterhouse had been drinking heavily and at 2am took a friend’s car and drove around the campsite.

Three other campers were injured inside their tents.

At the previous hearing Waterhouse admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, having no insurance or licence and failing to provide a breath specimen.

He entered no plea to an alternative charge of driving dangerously.

Judge Rowlands warned Waterhouse, who wept in the dock, that it was a “desperately serious” matter and he faced a lengthy custodial sentence.

Waterhouse was remanded in custody until another hearing at Mold on October 22.
