A CAIA PARK Councillor has called for street-sweeping equality across Wrexham, claiming some areas are afforded the service while others aren’t.

Cllr Malcolm King OBE, who chairs the Caia Park Community Council, spoke about the current state of litter across the area, and claims that some areas of Wrexham are afforded the luxury of street sweepers while wards around Caia Park are not.

Speaking at the latest Caia Park Community Council meeting, Cllr King said: “After a workshop that I was a part of recently, it became apparent to me that a lot of areas have their own street sweepers.

“There are two wards in Caia Park, Smithfield and Wynnstay, which currently do not have their own street-sweepers. They have had them in the past but have not been replaced.

“It is unequal around Wrexham and is an unacceptable arrangement.”

The Welsh Labour representative of Wynnstay ward proposed that the community council write a letter to Wrexham Council, asking for information on street-sweepers across the county, finding out which areas have them and which do not.

He added: “It is similar with other council services that some areas benefit from them incredibly and some do not, such as the upkeep of pavements and alleyways.

“You wouldn’t see an overgrown alleyway in Rossett. You only have to drive around to see how beautifully maintained other areas are, and drive round here to see they’re absolutely not, and that’s not acceptable.

“The idea that some of the poorer areas of Wrexham are expected to do their own litter picking, while some of the more affluent areas have it done for them, is a grotesque inequality.

“Caia Park isn’t the only area that is affected by this, and I would suggest that as a community council, we write a letter to find out what the plan is moving forward, and see if we can receive information about what areas of Wrexham do and do not have their own street-sweepers.”
