THERE was a rare footballing sight in the Anglesey League recently when a grandfather and his grandson took to the pitch alongside one another.

There may be a forty year age gap between Stephen Edwards, 56, and grandson Jake, but that didn't stop the pair lining-up in the same team for Arriva Bangor in their 4-1 Elias Cup win over Llandegfan on August 30.

Scott Hughes (3) and Lewis Hall were the scorers on the night for The Busmen in Treborth but it was the unusual family-ties within the team that caught the eye.

Arriva manager Kevin Jones said: "We are so proud of how they work together and they are two of the nicest players you could meet.

"Stephen is in his third season with the club. His attitude, ability and commitment is priceless to the club.

"He's not missed a single training session or game over the last two seasons and I'm sure I will get the same again from him this season.

"Jake is a very talented player with bags of potential, he is the youngest player I have ever signed at Arriva Bangor.

"He's played many of our pre-season games and showed his ability to play men's football with ease against Menai Bridge, Llanfairfechan and many more and showed his capabilities. He will be a big player for us going forward."

Stephen says it was a "fantastic" feeling to be playing alongside his grandson this season.

"He doesn't know whether to call me Grandad or Steve at the moment!" he added.
