CONSTRUCTION work is starting on a £3.9m development of business units at a former Holyhead heliport

Ten units are being built at Holyhead’s Penrhos Industrial Estate to provide 30,000 sq ft of office, light industrial and storage space.

The Isle of Anglesey County Council secured almost £4m funds for the project aimed at promoting business growth and support the low carbon energy sector.

Wynne Construction will carry out the work starting at the end of September and the units will be ready by the summer of 2020.

Anglesey’s economic development officers successfully applied for £2.3m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government and, in a first for Anglesey, agreed an innovative joint venture worth £1.6m with the Welsh Government.

The project is part of wider plans to develop Anglesey’s Enterprise Zone and Energy Island Programme.

The project complements other EU backed business premises at the Bryn Cefni Business Park, Llangefni and the Menai Science Park, Gaerwen.

Anglesey county council's economic development and major projects portfolio holder Cllr Carwyn Jones said: “There are currently a significant number of major private sector low carbon energy projects under development on Anglesey, including the exciting Morlais tidal energy scheme.

“We are also confident of seeing the Wylfa Newydd project revived as part of the UK Government’s commitment to developing a rich energy mix, achieving net zero emissions by 2050. We are working to ensure that the infrastructure is in place so the island benefits from these business opportunities.”

Economy Minister Ken Skates said: “I am delighted work is set to start on this development, which will help ensure Holyhead has the infrastructure in place to enable dynamic businesses to flourish in the low-carbon sector.

It will also contribute toward creating the type of inclusive and sustainable prosperity in North Wales that we are working hard to drive through our Economic Action Plan.”

Wynne Construction Commercial Manager Simon Moreton added: “We are due to start work later this month. These ten new units will be a welcome addition to the existing retail and business provision at Penrhos."
