Controversial plans for a pet crematorium in rural Anglesey have sparked concerns.

The proposals, which involve the conversion of a domestic building into a small incinerator, have been earmarked for Frondeg Cottage near Llanfachraeth.

The nearest pet crematorium is 65 miles away in Holywell, Flintshire.

The applicants say it would be a “discrete low-key facility”and that the specialist LPG fired incinerator would go unnoticed by neighbours or the public, lying on the unclassified road between Llanfachraeth and Llanddeusant.

The planning statement accompanying the application, submitted by Annwen McCann, says it would emit “no external smells, smoke or odours” with no plans  to bury waste on site.

“In brief, the service involves the applicant collecting (by small van) demised domestic pets, carrying them respectfully in safely-sealed crematorium bags to the site, preparing and incinerating them immediately on arrival,” notes the report, adding that neighbours have already been made aware of the plans.

“Duration of incineration depends on the size and weight of the subject, maximum being two hours.

“Gathering the ashes, grinding the bones to dust, placing the ashes in bags urns or caskets, and returning the remains to their owners.”

However, the plans have already sparked some local opposition with two letters of objection being received by the authority.

Among the concerns raised are the “unknown effects of smoke, fumes and dust,” with the lack of parking space also cited.

While another letter sent to the planning department said: “The premises are situated on a very narrow road with no speed restriction in force, allowing vehicles to travel up to 60mph.

“The width of the lane will only allow two vehicles to pass each other by exercising extreme caution.

“The lane is frequented by bus twice an hour that takes the full width of the lane plus numerous agricultural vehicles, tractors and trailers.

“We feel there are more suitable sites on industrial estates locally, where businesses such as this should be conducted.”

It is expected that Anglesey Council’s planning department will consider the plans over the coming weeks.
