A DENBIGH woman was joined by family and friends to celebrate a major birthday.

Last month, Dorothy Jones, of Lon Llewellyn, Denbigh attained the grand age of 100 years.

A birthday party for 150 family, friends and neighbours was held at Denbigh Rugby Club and it proved to be a very joyous occasion.

Mrs Jones was transported to the party in a horse-drawn white carriage, provided by Caramel Stud Carriages, St Asaph, which was a gift from her grandchildren.

Upon arrival, she was given a rousing welcome by all of her family and the guests present.

The highlight of the afternoon was a demonstration by the Croeso 69 Morris Dancing troupe, accompanied by Mrs Jones on the tambourine.

The group included Bronwen, Mrs Jones' daughter.

Denbigh Male Voice Choir performed several of Dorothy's favourite hymns and songs, which she sang along with.

Her zest for life was apparent for all to see and the happiness of the occasion was infectious - and the biggest smile of all was on Mrs Jones' face.

A buffet tea was prepared by Ffion Howatson, of Ji Binc, and it was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Mrs Jones was raised in Holyhead.

She spent her early life there before becoming a nurse at the North Wales Hospital, in Denbigh, at a young age.

Mrs Jones carried out her duties with compassion and understanding, which is her true nature.

During that period, she met her husband Bobby and they were married in 1940.

They were married for 56 years until his death in 1996.

Mrs Jones has seven children, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren, most of whom were present at the party.

She is at her happiest when surrounded by children and they visit regularly at her home, where she has resided for the past 71 years.

Mrs Jones was delighted to receive cards from The Queen and First Minister Mark Drakeford.

It is her wish to thank everyone who made the celebration such a wonderful occasion.

Donations in lieu of gifts, which amounted to in excess of £560, have been given to Ty Gobaith children's hospice.
