FOOTBALLERS from Gwynedd took to the pitch to raise £1877.90 for St David's Hospice.

In May, a charity match was arranged between two former Sunday League teams - Goron Fach from Caernarfon and Fic Felin from Felinheli.

The teams played against one another in memory of their friend Hugh Alun Williams aka Al Wern who died in August 2017.

The fixture - known as the Al Wern Cup match - was also set up as a way to say thank you to staff at St David's Hospice's Hafan Menai day care centre for the support shown to another friend, Richie Humphries.

The winners' cup was eventually presented to the Fic Felin team by Mr Williams' wife, Sue Williams and the landlords of both pubs connected to the teams.

Speaking on the success of the fundraiser, player Alex Philp said: “The match seemed the perfect way to honour a great man who was always willing to help local football teams.

"From Caernarfon Town to Caernarfon Borough, Al was a much loved and respected person in both Caernarfon and Felinheli.

"Most people have experienced cancer in some way or another, be it a family member or a friend. We are so grateful for the huge turnout at the match allowing us to honour a hugely popular figure in the Caernarfon area and raise funds for an important local charity.”

Mr Williams had ran both the Goron Fach and Fic Felin pubs before his sudden death aged 62 in 2017.

Local charity St David’s Hospice merged in 2018 with Hospice at Home Gwynedd and Anglesey and provides specialist hospice care for those living with advanced illnesses and in need of end of life care.

The day therapy provided free of charge at Hafan Menai Day Hospice is an essential part of Hospice care, most patients want to continue being as independent as possible. Patients attend for an agreed period of time and have an individual program of activities and care tailored to suit their needs.
