Mold stock sale - August 16

ANOTHER excellent show of cattle for mid-August, with nearly 300 forward.

Cattle remain in demand, although out-of-spec cattle are becoming harder to place with more cattle to chose from and as a result of the beef trade.

A smaller show of dairy met very strong demand.

Calves were subdued, with a packed ringside of buyers, although all seeming to have a budget and were not willing to stretch.

The best calves still remain strong.

Rhayader store cattle sale - August 14

Store cattle (89):

An excellent seasonal number of store cattle forward for the August sale, the first under the new management of Rhayader Livestock Sales, sold to an excellent trade throughout.

Heifers averaged 199.84ppkg with a top price of 243ppkg and £1155.

Bulls averaged 182.97ppkg with a top price of 215ppkg and £790.

Messrs Bound also sold the top price per head at £1155 for a shapely 530kg Limousin x heifer.

Good quality steers also found a strong demand selling up to £1110 (540kg Limousin x) from Colin Watts, Pytindu Farm and 227ppkg for a 13 month old Limousin x steer (485kg - £1100) from Messrs S & DJ Williams, Cefnllech.

Plenty of other well shaped cattle sold to above £2 per kilo and more of these types could easily have been sold to the same good price.

Trade for the middle quality types was also good with enough buyers present to create competitive bidding for these.

Overall, it was a very pleasing first store cattle sale and the auctioneers would like to thank all vendors and buyers for their support.

Entries are now being taken for the next sale of store cattle to be held at Rhayader market on Wednesday, October 2.

A smaller entry of lambs forward resulted in stronger competition for all weights and grades of lambs.

In most demand were the well meated, better shaped export weight lambs (39-45kg) with plenty of these selling to 200ppkg and above. Lighter weight lambs were also in stronger demand, especially the better bred 34-38kg lambs, with some of the leaner lambs in this weight being purchased as store lambs.

Heavier weight lambs also sold to a stronger trade, with more buyers looking to purchase these types.

Trade going forward will now depend on the numbers of finished lambs that come into the market.

Cull sheep (1,536):

There was a reduced entry of 1,524 cull ewes that sold to a much sharper trade throughout, with an overall average of £47.55.

The average does not really do justice to the trade, as there were many smaller Welsh ewes present.

All ewes would easily be up £10 on the previous week, with some of the strongest ewes up £15-£18.

The best sold ewes were the strongest ewes, mostly being Texel x and Suffolk x.

The top price of £115.50 went to DC Jones, Trefaes Isaf for a pen of Texel x ewes, closely followed by C Crowther, East Dudston who sold

Breeding ewes:

BREEDING EWES

An entry of 500 ewes was a hit with a larger crowd, as more surrounded the ring as they look for flock replacements.

Yearling ewes peaked at £162 for Texels from HE Pugh, Grove Farm with others to £159 from NC Jones, The Old Rectory.

Suffolk yearlings reached £150 from G Morgan, Cae Garreg, with others to £148 from the same and £148 again from NC Jones, The Old Rectory.

An entry of five cows and calves from T & A & R Tudor, Llysun, sold to a top of £1550 for an Angus cow with a Lim bull calf.
