THOUSANDS of GCSE level students across North Wales will be picking up their results this morning.

Ysgol Eirias

GCSE students at Ysgol Eirias are this week celebrating excellent results. Core subjects of English, Maths, Cymraeg and Science have yielded high performance in the A*- C pass rate, whilst outstanding results in all areas signify the best results at the high end of the grade awards for Ysgol Eirias.

Technology and business subjects have excelled this year, in particular Art, Textiles, Graphics, Computer Science and Business Studies. Languages have also excelled: in French all students passed at grade C and above and in Welsh over half of the students in the year gained grade A or A*. Nearly all students in the year gained the relatively new Skills Challenge Certificate at Grade C and above.

All subjects across the school have reached high standards, particularly at the top end of the grading awards.

The school is looking forward to high numbers of students returning to continue their education at Ysgol Eirias next academic year.

The School succeeded in maintaining its high standards with 100% students achieving five or more quality GCSE grades with a significant number of those excelling across the subjects. IThe school was pleased to see 30 per cent of students have gained five or more A* / A grades whilst 88 per cent gained at least one A* / C GCSE grade in either Welsh or English.

Ysgol Bryn Elian

Ysgol Bryn Elian is celebrating a successful set of GCSE results, adding to the success of last week’s A level results.

Students not only scored well in well-established subject areas but also in the new Skills Challenge Certificate, a qualification which is rigorous and different to traditional GCSE’s demanding at times a different skill set. All students are also leaving Year 11 with at least 5 GCSE’s bringing to reality the school’s motto of Achievement for All.

Dave Humphreys, head teacher, said, “ Yet again the school has achieved results of a very pleasing standard.  We are very proud of all the young people who have worked so hard and tirelessly. We are very much looking forward to seeing them back in our successful sixth form in September.

Ysgol John Bright

Ysgol John Bright had a bumper crop of results seeing a 10  ten per cent improvement on last year’s results with nearly a quarter of the pupils getting five A star or A grades.

Ann Webb, head teacher, said: “We’ve also seen results in English and Maths improve by 10 per cent, so overall it’s a much improved performance and we are seeing the fruits of the school’s improvement strategy.

“We’ve an exceptional group of students who have grafted very hard and have been incredibly well supported by a very strong teaching staff so that the improvements we’ve made to teaching and learning are bearing fruit.”

Head boy Bradley Hughes gained 8 A* and six As. He said: “It’s all been a bit nerve racking. “I want to come back to sixth form to do maths, further maths, physics and chemistry.”

Two of the highest attaining students were Eva Sutton, of Craig y Don, and Lucy Marshall, from Great Orme, who both picked up 10 A*s and two As.

Eva said: “It’s beyond my wildest dreams,” while Lucy added: “It was horrible waiting for today. I wasn’t sure how well I’d do but I’ve done better than expected.”

Clara Raghb, from Llandudno gained 12 GCSEs made up of five A*s, six As and a B. She said: “I’d expected far lower and was a bit worried but I’m thrilled now and I’d like to go on to do medicine eventually.”

Kathryn Flitcroft gained nine A*s and three As and her mum, Karen Hughes, said: “It’s fabulous. She thought she might have to do some resits but I knew she’d do well.”

Chairman of governors Carla Forfar said: “The school is very much on the ascendant and it’s wonderful to see all the happy faces this morning.”

More than 75% of them achieving at least five GCSEs at A* to C and more than a quarter achieving five or more A*/A grades. 

Special congratulations go to Libby Bond, Marnie Cockrill, Nathan Cuthbert, Thomas Kiddell, Ewan Marshall, Louis Morris, Ella Owen, Hannah Partington, Lois Porter, Elin Watson and Mabli Watson-Jones all of whom achieved at least 9 A*/A grades.

Ian Gerrard, head teacher said: “We are proud of the achievements of all of our students in a wide range of traditional academic subjects like Science, Welsh, French and German, as well as in vocational subjects such as Product Design, P.E., Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Hair Dressing.

“It is so important we provide a curriculum that meets the needs and interests of all and we are delighted that students benefit so much from their experiences here.  The school has improved its academic performance in all of the measures used by Welsh government and we are extremely pleased with the progress we and our students are making.”
