LLANSANNAN got their expected Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division title challenge underway with a 3-1 victory at Llanelwy Athletic.

Tom Lewis’ side inflicted a first ever league defeat on the Division One champions in their first outing at this level, with Athletic going unbeaten during their inaugural campaign last term to claim the crown.

A positive start from the visitors saw them go ahead on 12 minutes when veteran striker Leon Gierke made the most of the space afforded to him for the opener, and Ellis Vaughan notched a second almost immediately following the restart to double their advantage with 22 on the clock.

The home side picked themselves up from the blow and got themselves back into the game on the quarter hour mark thanks to a neat finish from Luke Stanley, but Sannan struck again in first half stoppage time through Jack Glover to restore their two-goal cushion and seal an opening day triumph.

Abergele picked up a notable scalp in their first fixture thanks to a 3-1 home success over championship contenders Llandudno Athletic.

The hosts were behind at the interval but managed to pull clear during the second period, with James Lloyd, an own goal and Jack Lloyd securing three points.

Robin Hughes, Sion Jones and John Gardner were on target for Bro Cernyw in their outstanding 3-0 win at Rhos United, and Llanfairfechan Town also got off to a flyer thanks to a 7-2 triumph at Y Glannau.

A four-goal salvo from the clinical Ryan Woods did the majority of the damage, with efforts from Iwan Sion Jones, Curtis Murray and Robin Roberts completing the rout.

The hosts did manage to secure a pair of consolations either side of the break courtesy of Darren Morris and a Joey Fontana penalty.
