ANGLESEY school pupils tried learning Mandarin, Tai Chi during and the ancient art of calligraphy during Chinese skills sessions.

During the last two weeks of term, 150 pupils from Ysgol David Hughes, Menai Bridge, learned about the culture and language of China from experts at Bangor University.

Over a period of three days, Year 9 pupils took part in the sessions, helped by tutors from the university's Confucius Institute.

In Tai Chi, the pupils learned how to improve their balance, posture, strength and flexibility of their bodies, relieve stress and anxiety as well improving their memory, concentration and multi-tasking.

Calligraphy is regarded as one of China's top visual arts and pupils enjoyed learning about the history of Chinese characters and how the art has evolved and developed over the centuries.

They managed to write simple Chinese symbols and formed words on paper.

They also learned how to greet people and hold a simple conversation in Mandarin.

Ysgol David Hughes, assistant Headteacher Mrs Meinir Davies said: "The Confucius Institute has afforded our pupils the opportunity to learn about different cultures through the medium of art, language and movement.

"The pupils really enjoyed trying new experiences and speaking to the tutors.

This is the second time the Confucius Institute has led sessions at Ysgol David Hughes and we certainly hope to welcome tutors here again next year.
