Plans to demolish a former engineering block have been approved by council planners.

The single-storey building at the Coleg Menai campus on Ffriddoedd Road in Bangor has been empty since the opening of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s £13.6m centre of engineering excellence at Llangefni on Anglesey.

Described by the college as in a poor state of repair and considered “dangerous”, the roof was said to be “a fragile form of construction”, with the demolition set to take place during August.

Despite some objections, based on the building’s design, officers approved the application without the need to go in front of the authority’s planning committee.

But the report noted: “The proposal is not contrary to any relevant policy nor is it likely to have a detrimental effect on the amenities of the local area or neighboring houses, road safety or protected species, and is therefore considered acceptable.

“The objections have been fully considered in assessing the application. However, due to the rules that allow for demolition, the application must be determined in accordance with the material considerations set out in the General Permitted Development Order.

“There is no evidence of any material planning reason to object to the proposed demolition and remediation works proposed for the site. The application is therefore considered acceptable.”

The move comes just months after Grwp Llandrillo Menai revealed plans worth £18m to leave the Ffriddoedd and Friars site to create a lifelong learning zone and centre of excellence for the creative industries at Parc Menai on the outskirts of the city.

The scheme includes the acquisition of the Tŷ Menai and Llwyn Brain buildings on Parc Menai, with courses ranging from art and music technology to games design and TV production all available on the same site.

Coleg Menai Principal Aled Jones-Griffith said: “We have long identified the need to move from our current site as the buildings are in such a state of disrepair.

“The relocation to Parc Menai would bring our Bangor campus into the 21st century and allow us to offer students and staff the best possible environment to excel here in north west Wales.

“Given that the Parc Menai site is positioned alongside some of the region’s leading creative companies, it is perfectly located for greater partnership working with industry.

“This will help us to ensure that the learning and training opportunities offered to young people meet the skills requirements of local employers.”
