It was thankfully ‘all’s wool that ends wool’ - after a lamb was rescued from a four-foot drain in Bala.

The ram had become stuck down a roadside drain on the main A494 trunk road through Bala and was first discovered at around 10am on Sunday with the RSPCA called for assistance.

It was thought that the lamb had crawled through a culvert under the road looking for his mother.

RSPCA deputy chief inspector Phil Lewis said: “This lamb had become separated from the flock - and he may have been looking for his mother as a group of them had been weaned the day before.

“It was quite surprising to see a lamb down the drain - he was in quite a predicament! We managed to open the culvert drain with the assistance of Gwynedd Council’s highways department along with the farmer, and the lamb was then pulled out of the drain successfully.

“Luckily he was unharmed and was returned straight away to the flock. He was very lucky to have been spotted and not to have been injured during this unusual ordeal. I have rescued many, many sheep over the years from different scenarios - but this is the first time I have come across one stuck down a drain.”

Last year (2018) RSPCA Cymru officers rescued and collected 196 sheep - as part of the 8,006 animals rescued across Wales.
