THE first steps in rejuvenating a Rhyl landmark are underway.

Denbighshire County Council has completed a safety inspection on the Queen's Market complex, on Sussex Street, which is set for £30 million in investment alongside the former Savoy Hotel.

In April, the first conceptual drawings of the councils plans with partners Ion Developments for the transformation of 97,000 sq ft site show intentions for a mixed use space including retail, food and a contemporary market space as well as residential use and an open courtyard.

A spokesman for Denbighshire County Council said: “We have completed a safety inspection and a programme of minor work will continue over the summer while a number of surveys will also be carried out on the buildings.

Currently, parts of the historic buildings are in poor condition, with still to be finalised plans aiming to retain as much of the original architecture as possible, while existing occupants continue to trade on the site.

The spokesperson added: “We would like to remind residents that The Queen’s Market remains open during this period and businesses are open as usual.

“Denbighshire County Council is continuing to work with private sector development partners to consider how to transform the site into a vibrant mix of retail, food and beverage, contemporary market, leisure/culture, office and residential space while improving accessibility from the waterfront and promenade into the town centre.

“We will keep residents informed as the project develops.”
