A CHARITY football match held over two legs on Anglesey has raised £785 for the family of a young girl battling germ cell cancer.

Maisy Fitzmaurice, 10, was diagnosed in April and has undergone various forms of treatment, including chemotherapy since.

In an effort to help her family raise funds to pay for the cost of travelling to medical appointments, Cemaes Bay and Amlwch football clubs arranged a double-header which has raised the substantial amount.

Y Cefn Glas and Y Gadlys also donated to the cause as did Huws Gray and raffles were held to further increase the sum.

The traditional rivals went head to head with Cemaes eventually coming out on top with a 6-5 on aggregate.

In the first leg at School Lane, The Bay came out on top with a 4-2 win but Amlwch later had revenge in the return fixture at Lon Bach, coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

Maisy’s father Tony says he’s been “touched” by the generosity of both communities, who have pulled together to show their support in various ways.

Taking to social media, he said: “As a family, we are hugely grateful for everything.

“What fantastic community spirit by both clubs involved. Also a huge thanks to everyone who came and supported.”

Alan Gray, who has allegiances to both clubs as someone who is assistant manager of Cemaes and lives in Amlwch, added: “I would like to say well done to managers Ryan Mckean, Darren Thomas and the committees of Amlwch and Cemaes who might be rivals geographically but came together for a great cause.

"I’ve known the Fitzmaurice's all my life, they are my neighbours and close friends so it was a pleasure to have been a part of this.

"I think I speak on behalf of us all in saying that, there is no place like this when it comes to community spirit."
