New season lambs:

An increased entry averaged 190.0ppk, with the strongest types again selling very well.

There was an another seasonal entry with the harvest weather and it was a much better trade then expected, with the best lambs again being very well sold.

THE beef trade was very dear, with demand far exceeding supply.

Cull cow trade remained on fire with more needed each week to satisfy demand.

A shortage of lambs also resulted in a fast trade.

Ruthin store and breeding stock sale - July 4

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 15 store cattle to £975.00; 43 calves to £440; 10 OTM cattle to £816; 11 cows with calves at foot to £1,570; 21 new season store lambs to £63.50 and 23 breeding ewes to £116.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

A good entry forward, with another flyer of a trade.

There are numerous enquiries from new and regular purchasers for all breeds of calves.

There was competitive bidding throughout the sale, with a strong 3 month old British Blue bull calf topping at £440, 2 months to £315 and 4m Brit Blue heifers selling to £305.

There were some strong Limousin calves forward also.

A 3 month bull calf achieved £390, while a 4 week old Limousin bull calf eventually sold for £335.

There was a consignment of Devon calves and they were also in keen demand, with a 3 month old realising £270.

The auction is expecting a large number of calves on a weekly basis.

Monthly calf competition:

Ruthin Farmers' Auction has teamed up with Genus to run a monthly competition within the weekly calf section to win Genus vouchers.

The vendor with the highest priced calf, one month old and under sired by a Genus bull during each month, will be awarded a £50 voucher to spend on agricultural products.

The winner of the June competition was J G Jones, of Rhydwen Farm, Lloc, Holywell.

Store cattle (auctioneers: Emyr Lloyd and Glyn Owens):

There was a small entry mainly due to the sunshine.

The entries forward sold very well and more could have been sold.

Two dairy cattle were sold on behalf of Lisk Bros, Anglesey.

A British Friesian x 2nd calver achieved £1,530; Montbeliarde x 6th calver sold for £900.

Breeding ewes (auctioneer: Elfor Morris):

The first entry of the season and with the country bathed in sunshine, there were less than usual about with many more expected over the next few weeks.

A number of enquiries were made pre-sale for ewes and the trade was showing all the signs of strong demand with good quality about.

Lleyn 6 tooth to £116; Texel 4 year old to £113; Crocc Bred ewes to £106.

Store lambs:

The same applied in the store lambs section, with weather affecting the numbers, but it was a good trade, with Texel lambs achieving £63.50 and £54.00.

More anticipated throughout the season and expected to increase each week.

Mold stock sale - July 5

THERE were decent entries in all sections again for early July.

Calves met a packed ringside of buyers and a reasonable trade, although buyers are nervous to pay over the odds.

Strong stores remain in demand, although younger types are still the most challenging to place.

Dairy was in line again, although many buyers were busy harvesting.

A smaller number of OTM cattle were on offer, seeing a top price of £969.44 (146ppkg) for a Limousin x OTM weighing in at 664kg from TI Jones, Braich Bedw.

RE & L Jones, Farchwel made 136ppkg for a Limousin x weighing 700kg making £952.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £577.70 (109ppkg) for a Stabiliser x weighing 530kg from G Jones & Son, Yr Ogof.

Averages of the day were as follows:

Prime lambs:

An entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 192.85ppkg, with a top price of 222ppkg, firstly for pen of lambs weighing 45kg making £100 from AE Casewell, Bodynfoel and secondly for 42.5kg lambs making £94.50 for Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen.

Top price per head was £109 for 63kg lambs from ML & RI Davies, Caecappin.

A similar number of lambs forward sold to a similar trade compared to the previous Monday, which is pleasing considering the drop in the trade throughout the previous week.

In most demand were the well bred lighter weight lambs between 32-36kg, which constantly sold around £2 per kilo.

Also in keen demand were the very light under 30kg lambs (of which there were few on offer) and also the better bred, better meated heavier weight lambs which were competitive throughout.

With the forthcoming ethnic festival in August, it is hoped that trade in the coming weeks will improve.

Cull sheep:

There was an increased entry of 1,909 cull ewes that met a terrific trade from start to finish, with an overall average of £63.23 being achieved.

The best Texel and Suffolk ewes were very well sold, with any amount selling between £90-£100.

Meated Welsh ewes were also well sold, with the best reaching £72.50.

Top price of the day went to WT Davies & Co, Canllefaes Uchaf, Cardigan that sold Texel ewes at £133 - this terrific run of Texel and Texel x ewes averaged £117.90.

Cull rams averaged £94.86 with a top price of £111 going to TG Davies, Home Farm.

Texel ewes to £133; Suffolk x ewes to £102; Mule ewes to £85; Speckled ewes to £70.50; Welsh ewes to £72.50.

The auction thoroughly advises vendors to shear their cull ewes from now onwards as premiums will be gained.

A total of 13 individual cull ewes buyers were present once again, meaning competitive bidding from start to finish and a terrific trade.

Cow and calves:

A large entry of 33 cows and calves met with a stronger trade than a fortnight ago, the best outfits sold well with prices firmer throughout.

Leading the way were MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden with a top price of £2350 for a British Blue x 1st calver with her Limousin x heifer calf at foot.

The same home also made £2250 for a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin heifer calf.

DH & GW Pryce reached £2160 for a Limousin x 2nd Calver with her Limousin x bull calf at foot.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000+, 4 Lots; £1800-2000, 2 Lots; £1600-1800, 5 Lots; £1400-1600, 7 Lots; £1200-1400, 5 Lots; <£1200, 7 Lots.

Store cattle:

There was a small July entry of good quality store cattle, which met with a better trade than expected considering the drop in the beef price.

Steers averaged 193.09ppkg or £914 per head and heifers averaged 201.36ppkg or £729.06 per head.
