CAERNARFON school kids' effort added up to success in a summer maths challenge.

Ysgol Gynradd Bethel, Caernarfon is celebrating after scooping first place in the international Summer Sprint maths challenge.

The competition, which this year ran between June 17-23, was powered by 3P Learning, developers of Mathletics, an award-winning online maths resource designed to make learning maths fun.

Over the week, thousands of students from 174 schools in the UK, Europe, and The Middle East competed against each other, testing their strengths and determination to gain as many points as possible to win the 3 coveted prizes.

Pupils also raised money for UNICEF whilst competing, with each point gained corresponding to a cash donation to the charity from 3P Learning.

The competition, aims to inspire children to enjoy learning maths and improve their engagement and motivation.

During the course of the challenge, students gain points by competing in live, multi-player challenges and answering curriculum questions using Mathletics.

At the end of the competition, the school with the most points is crowned the winner, with second and third place titles being placed too. All three schools receive money towards the renewal of their Mathletics subscription, and a celebration pack including a trophy, wristbands and certificate.

Commenting on the win, Nia Elwyn, Maths Coordinator from Ysgol Gynradd Bethel said, “The students were so excited and eager to take part in the Summer Sprint maths challenge and it has been very encouraging to see them so driven.

All pupils got stuck in and have found a passion for maths in the spirit of competition. Children were dedicated to using Mathletics both in school and at home.

Since introducing Mathletics to the classroom, we have seen a world of change in our students’ attitude to maths.

They love using Mathletics thanks to the engaging interface provided by the resource, and have become so much more motivated and focused, while improving their grades too!

Pupils know that if they are struggling with a concept, they can log into Mathletics and practise this area in order to master it.

Children often comment on how much Mathletics has helped their learning.”

Judy Peritz Wynne, Regional Marketing Manager at 3P Learning, added “Congratulations to everyone at Ysgol Gynradd Bethel who took part in the Summer Sprint.

"Well done for your brilliant achievement - it’s fantastic to see so many children getting stuck into a maths competition to top off a successful school year. We hope to see you competing again next year!"
