THINGS are just champion for talented rugby players.

Blood, sweat and tears have certainly paid off as Abergele Ladies have been crowned at North Wales champions.

Showing what a tremendous campaign they experienced, Abergele lost only once over the course of the season.

This came versus an outstanding COBRA side.

Abergele comfortably beat the Mid Walians at home, but they were then edged out by three points in the return fixture.

To prove the confidence he had in the squad, coach Phil Blakoe opted to field eight newcomers in the must-win last match at Llangollen.

The Dee Valley side provided tough opposition in the humid conditions and Abergele relished the challenge by winning 21-0.

At the start of the season, Abergele made a brave move in tempting coach Philip Blakoe away from Rhyl Rugby Club after 38 years as a player and coach.

By now, Abergele have an astonishing 35 players from which to choose from

One of the main highlights of the season was a cup game against Cardiff University, with Abergele winning 48-5.

Sadly, through injury, Abergele couldn’t continue with the cup run and instead they put all their efforts into getting fit for the second half of the season.

Over the course of the season, Abergele scored an epic 93 tries to win the North Wales title.

The Abergele club also runs an U-16s team and pre-season training for the next campaign will begin in early July.
