AN ANGLESEY-BASED surgery has been recognised for its efforts to increase the uptake of the flu jab within the community.

Cambria Surgery has been awarded the 'Beat Flu General Practice Achievement Award' from Public Health Wales after carrying out over 1,400 flu jabs between October 2018 – March 2019.

The Beat Flu Awards recognise, acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of individuals and teams in Wales work hard to raise awareness and promote flu vaccination.

Dr Elaine Hampton said the team have worked hard during the flu season to ensure those eligible in their community were protected against the potentially life-threatening illness.

She said: “The team have worked incredibly hard to improve the uptake of the flu jab on the previous year.

“We opened the surgery on a Saturday morning to ensure we reached those who may have found it difficult during the week to book in with us.

“This was very successful and during the morning we saw around 350 people turn up to get their jab!

“We are thrilled to have received this award and to see that the efforts of the team have been recognised.”

The Health Board took over the management of the surgery on 1 April and has successfully secured salaried GPs for the practice.

The practice also has two nurses, two Health Care Assistants and one Advanced Nurse Practitioner. A Physiotherapist also visits the surgery on weekly basis as well as community psychiatric nurses and a dietician.

Wyn Thomas, Assistant Area Director for Primary Care for BCUHB, said: “We have successfully taken over the running of Cambria Surgery and have four salaried GPs working at the practice that will be able to provide continuity of care for the patients.

“We are looking forward to working together with the staff and patients to improve and increase the services we offer.”
