A WELL-LOVED Anglesey boating lake and play area has been given a colourful make-over helping to make it more 'child friendly.'

The popular Beaumaris water attraction, with its adjoining play equipment, is a popular venue with local and visiting children.

Now, thanks to a Beaumaris Town Council investment of around £20-25,000, for improvements in the pier area, the boating lake and play park have been refitted with a special springy surface made from rubberised granules, designed to make it safer.

The lake, which is thought to be around 90 years had become run down over the years.

But now, Rhyl-based company Approved Resin Driveway, of Kinmel Bay, has laid 250 square metres of brightly coloured "rubble crumb," also known as "wet pour rubber," on top of a base of recycled shredded tyres.

The area now sports the words "Welcome" and "Croeso," in Welsh, there are two red dragons, and a hopscotch game has been incorporated into the design.

Nick Bagley project officer said: "The boating is a very well used and is a much loved feature in Beaumaris.

"I've traced the boating lake history to the 1930s, but it is possible it has been there longer.

"It had become a little bit tired over the years, and it needed a bit of upgrading.

"So we have redesigned it, given it a colourful make-over, and we have also made it more child-friendly.

"It is now brightly coloured, and has two Welsh dragons and we have added a hopscotch game for the kids to play on.

"The surface is very springy, making it much safer and we have also put rubber around around the play equipment as well as a special liner around the lake itself."

Contractor Matt Bestall said: "The materials we have used are not new, but what is new are the bright colours, which are ideal for the children.

"I'm very much looking forward to bringing my own two daughters Macy and Daisy here in the summer, they'll love it."

Mayor of Beaumaris Cllr Jason Zalot will be formally opening the boating lake area with a ceremony at 1pm, on Friday, April 5.

Cllr Zalot said: "The boating lake is a very well used and popular play area with locals and visitors alike. I remember playing on it with boats with my friends when I was a child.

"We are very happy to have been able to improve it for the children, and hope they will be able to enjoy it for many more years to come."

The opening ceremony will be attended by Beaumaris school children and it is hoped, weather permitting, they will also be taken on a ride on the big wheel which has been erected on the green this week.
