A FORMER primary school will be turned into a manufacturing unit after being given the green light by council planners.

In 2013, Anglesey Council’s Executive voted to shut Ysgol Ffrwd Win in Llanfaethlu due to empty spaces, and build a new school to be shared with Ysgol Llanfachraeth and Llanrhuddlad’s Ysgol Cylch y Garn.

The new Ysgol y Llannau opened its doors in 2017.

The empty building, based near the centre of the village, now looks set to be given a new lease of life after being taken over by Lloyds Blinds.

The firm, established in 1979, is currently based in Bryngwran but the application would see the school building used as a unit for manufacturing

window blinds (class B2).

Planning officers told this afternoon’s meeting in Llangefni that two jobs are expected to be created by the development but that the company would maintain their current base in Bryngwran, with the Llanfaethlu site designed to manufacture the products.

“The proposal is for the change of use of the former primary school into a business use (Class B2) for the manufacturing of window blinds,”  the report said.

“The external appearance of the former school will not be altered nor modified.

“A structural Survey has been submitted as part of the planning application which shows that the current building is structurally sound and capable of sustaining a change of use of the building into a unit for the manufacturing of window blinds.

“It is not considered that the proposed development will impact the surrounding amenities nor any neighbouring properties to such a degree to warrant a refusal.”

The application was approved unanimously.
