A BANGOR University student is looking for local support for a project to help children with disabilities in East Africa.

Yenita Singer is a 24 year-old final year Learning Disability student nurse who has spent two weeks last year at the Ongata Rongai Centre in Kenya.

Around 20 children live in the centre, which has no running water and limited resources. The youngsters are unable to leave the centre due to their physical disabilities.

As a result, Yenita, originally from Manchester but now living in Llandudno, has pledged to try to improve their lives in any way she possibly can. She has raised just under £1000 to date.

"Due to the lack of access there, my main project has been to adapt a wheelchair to be suitable for the off-road terrain of the roads in Kenya," she said.

"I arrived in Kenya this morning (Tuesday) with the wheelchair and will be taking it to the centre tomorrow.

"Unfortunately some adaptions were not possible in the time I had, but it is still an improvement on what they have now. And also something to work on for future visits.

"It will enable the children to not only leave the centre for therapeutic reasons but also to attend medical appointments when they’re unwell.

"Currently, those children who cannot leave the centre are rarely in receipt of medical attention.

The cost of adapting the wheelchair was just over £500 and Yenita's crowdfunding page will remain open for the duration of her time in Kenya (Five and a half weeks).

Money raised above the cost of the wheelchair will go towards a dentist's visit, health care appointments, toothbrushes, shoes and towels for postural care.

“I would be so grateful for any financial support for this,” she said.

“It really will make a difference to these children’s lives. I am aiming to return to Kenya again in the future."
