ONE of the Welsh football scene’s most recognisable faces is set to try out a new position - as a correspondent on S4C’s nightly magazine show ‘Heno’.

Bangor-born ex-midfielder Owain Tudur Jones has netted the role as the show’s third North Wales-based correspondent, following in the footsteps of Elin Fflur and Gerallt Pennant.

Owain will make his Heno debut on Monday, April 8.

Speaking ahead of his first appearance, the 34-year-old, who is also a pundit on S4C’s Sgorio and BBC Radio Cymru, says he is “looking forward” to the new challenge.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be a correspondent on Heno,”, said the father of two.

“The challenge will be very different from being a football analyser and pundit, and that’s why the job attracted me.

“I’ll now get the chance to share stories and interview people who are so important to S4C viewers. There’s a risk for a sports pundit to be typecast in the same way as actors, but, presenting on Heno will definitely add another string to my bow.”

Owain is familiar with success on and off the playing field. He turned out over 50 times for Swansea City between 2005 and 2009, helping the side gain promotion from League One and also earned seven caps for Wales.

Away from the pitch, he has gone on to help children’s programme, Cic, win a BAFTA Cymru award last year as one of the programme’s two presenters.

“There are many scary things that will come hand in hand with the role that will make my hair go grey even quicker, but many silver foxes have gained success on television!” said Owain, who admires famous grey-haired presenter, Phillip Schofield.
