RESIDENTS at a Caernarfon care home showed off their hooks and jabs with a boxing fitness coach who has previously worked with top actors and sports stars.

Henry James Jones has worked with the likes of former Formula One champion Jenson Button during his visits to the famous Santa Monica Box N Burn gym in Los Angeles.

Whilst at the gym, run by former UK Olympic boxing bronze medallist Tony Jeffries, Henry also met UFC superstar Conor McGregor and helped train Pitch Perfect’s Skylar Astin, Prison Break’s Frank Grillo and Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

Former boxing champion Henry recently took time out to host a special ‘Boxing for Fitness’ session at Pendine Park’s Bryn Seiont Newydd home.

The 21-year-old used his experience to put residents through their paces.

The former Welsh schools light-heavyweight champ, who is from Llandudno, said: “I really enjoyed it and so did the resients who showed great co-ordination and hand-eye speed.

“I think it could be very useful to people suffering from dementia because we have just seen with the residents that it’s like responding to hand signals. It’s like meditation because once you’re doing it you are thinking about nothing else. The residents can follow the movements and they can easily do it sitting down.”

The nearby city of Bangor has a rich boxing history with Welsh boxing champions like 1970 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Dave Davies. Bryn Seiont Newydd resident Ron Brown, who worked in the city’s boatyards, knew Dave.

He said: “I did a bit of boxing. I was a lightweight and I was quick around the ring too. I knew Dave Davies and his brothers Les and Steve, but my favourite boxer was Rocky Marciano.”
