MORE than 250 pupils from schools throughout Denbighshire gathered in Prestatyn to compete in a first of its kind event.

Year six pupils of Ysgol Clawdd Offa hosted a day long multi-sports event that welcomed teams from Christchurch County Primary School in Rhyl, Hirraddug in Dyserth and Ysgol Melyd in Meliden as well Ysgol Bodnant and Ysgol Penmorfa.

The largest such event organised by pupils in North Wales to date, Clawdd Offa's Bronze Ambassadors and its Sports Council organised the event to bring together all of the year six pupils from around Prestatyn in a fun event before they move on secondary school.

Andy Morris, teacher and organiser, said: "The event was a massive success - even the weather held off, everyone involved had a fantastic day and what was lovely to see was the children from different schools interacting and having a nice time with one another.

"Feedback from all individuals who attended the event was extremely positive with one teacher stating, “It was the best school day I have had in a long time", all the kids loved it."

In addition to the 250 pupils competing in a league with heats in boy's football, girl's football, netball, dodgeball and tag rugby, six Prestatyn High sixth form pupils officiated the event as part of the BTEC studies.

All of the points for all the events were totalled up before announcing the winner Clawdd Offa, with Bodnant in second and Melyd clinching third place.

To fund the event, children from Clawdd Offa's sports council wrote and personally delivered letters to businesses requesting support, with the pupils raising so much beyond their original goal that funds will rollover to another, similar event in the future.

Mr Morris added: "The School’s Sports council suggested this idea and we merely facilitated and supported them in their ambitions. The success of the event has given these pupils the confidence and the self-belief and they’re already thinking about the next big event."
