FUNDRAISERS who raised more than £10,000 through a 300-mile cycle ride from London to Paris have handed over cheques to Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Novice cyclists Leah Malbon, Karen Jutson and Pauline Hughes carried out the challenge last September.

Earlier this month, the trio visited the Bodelwyddan hospital and presented money to three wards.

Karen raised £3,540 for the Neonatal Unit and Leah raised £3,853.01 for Ward 12 Renal and Diabetes and Friends of Renal Care. Both received £1,546.50 each and the remaining was donated to Diabetes UK.

Pauline raised £3,533.01 for Sepsis Research – FEAT.

Leah said: "We were accompanied by Stephen Malbon and Emma from Awyr Las.

"On all three wards we were warmly welcomed by staff who were all very grateful for the funds.

"All will be used directly for the benefit of patients on the wards.

"After all the hard work over the last 18 months we came away with huge smiles and feeling pretty proud, especially as it was International Women's Day."

Leah added that the ride itself was an "amazing experience".

The women, from Rhyl and Prestatyn, became friends seven years ago after having children.

Leah said: "We would like to say thank you and let people know how much we raised - a total of £10,926.

"During the ride there was laughter and tears a plenty. The support we had from our families and friends kept us going.

"Knowing we would see our husbands and children at the finish line was certainly something to help us get back on the saddle.

"The build up and fundraising was exciting, humbling and at times we were overwhelmed by the support and generosity of people."

Emma Jones, fundraising support manager for Awyr Las, The North Wales NHS Charity, said: “It was wonderful to see Karen, Leah and Pauline - and Leah’s brother, Stephen - meet with some of the frontline NHS staff at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

“Everyone we visited was thrilled with the incredible amounts raised.

“It means so much to the staff because donations like these help them to fund additional services and special projects for their patients; things that go above and beyond what the NHS already provides.”
