A man accused of brandishing a knife during a rumpus at his Anglesey flat, causing a lone PC to draw his Taser, was remanded in custody after he admitted affray.

Jason Charles, 49, of Tyddyn Mostyn, Menai Bridge, will appear at Caernarfon crown court on April 12 for sentencing.

Magistrates at Llandudno heard a crowd had formed outside a block of flats on March 18 and the PC was told Charles and a second man had been fighting with knives.

Prosecutor James Neary said drunken Charles told the officer the other man had been “bullying” him, but he was locked in the bathroom. The defendant claimed he had the knife to protect himself. But he refused to allow the PC inside his flat and the atmosphere was “volatile,” the prosecutor added.

Liz Jones, defending, said Charles was fearful on the night and had apologised to the officer at the scene.

*Daniel Burgess, 34, also of Tyddyn Mostyn, appeared separately before the magistrates. He admitted assaulting an emergency worker after allegedly kicking a PC in the knee. He received a community order with rehabilitation to address alcohol and thinking. Burgess must also do 200 hours unpaid work and pay £100 compensation and £170 costs.

According to Burgess he had been drinking with his neighbour and was attacked with a knife in an unprovoked assault. He felt “confused” after being arrested himself, a probation officer said.

Carla Forfar, defending, said unemployed Burgess had “defensive” wounds and had run in the bathroom. A traffic officer arrived at the scene first and called for back-up. He now understood the perception of the police at the scene.
