A MULTI-MILLION pound construction company which has sites in Gwynedd is understood to have entered administration.

According to reports, Dawnus Construction, which has a site in Bangor and a small office in Caernarfon, has filed for administration with work grinding to a halt and workers across the UK reportedly called to meetings before being sent home.

The news could potentially have a huge impact on projects, local Government contracts, sub-contractors and jobs throughout North Wales. Dawnus has been responsible for highway works and winter maintenance on Anglesey and is currently undertaking flood alleviation work in Beaumaris.

The news of their administration comes as a further blow for the economy of Anglesey and Gwynedd following plans for Wylfa Newydd stalling and the Rehau plant in Amlwch, which employed more than 100 people, also set to shut down.

Commenting on the matter, Arfon MP Hywel Williams said: "This news has just broken, so it is too early to understand the nature of the problems apparent at Dawnus, but clearly it is important to concentrate on the local employees affected by this news, who will be understandably worried for their future.

"I extend my sympathies to all workers at Dawnus, including those based at the local offices in Bangor and Caernarfon and I stand ready to support those affected in any way that I can."

Ynys Môn AM Rhun ap Iorwerth, who is Plaid Cymru’s Shadow Minister for Economy and Finance, added: "I’m very concerned to hear about the collapse of Dawnus. I am concerned for staff employed by the company and their sub-contractors, some of whom are already telling me they are owed money.

"I will be seeking an urgent response from the Welsh Government."

Dawnus has been approached for comment.
