TWO Anglesey teenagers are on a mission to help save their island’s beaches from dirty dogs.

Friends Olivia Hart, 16, and Sara Davies, 11, love walking on Anglesey shores with their dogs Nala, a chocolate lab, and Guto, a pug.

But, whilst helping out during a recent litter pick on Newry Beach, Holyhead, the pair noticed large amounts of dog mess left by other dog walkers.

Olivia, who is a pupil at Holyhead High School sixth form, and Sara, who is at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, are both pageant queens and regularly involved with volunteering and fundraising.

Olivia holds the title Teen Natural Beauty North Wales and Sara is Junior Natural Beauty, Anglesey. Between them, the girls have raised about £10,000 for various local charities including Giddo’s Gift, which helps teenagers and young adults suffering from cancer and Wales Air Ambulance. They have also been involved with everything from running stalls, to litter picks, to running raffles and tombolas.

So, the girls decided, as part of their community-minded pageant activities, to start their own dog mess clean up project on Anglesey.

They set out to recycle two litre size plastic drinks bottles and turn them into dispensers filled with dog poo bags for the public to use when walking their dogs.

The dispensers have been attached to fences and places near to beaches, and other dog walking locations, on Anglesey, at places such as Holyhead, Llangefni, Valley and Trearddur Bay.

The dispensers also include instructions asking dog walkers to “bag and bin” their pets’ waste.

They also call on people to help keep the dispensers filled up - by donating bags if they happen to have spare ones in their pocket.

Emma Hart, Olivia’s mum, said: “I’m so proud of the girls, they really put their mind to helping the community after seeing so much dog mess on Anglesey’s beaches and other areas.

“Instead of complaining about the problem, they took action and got to work to do something positive about it to help keep their island clean.

“It is a really good project because it also involves recycling old plastic pop bottles into something useful.

“The whole scheme also encourages people to get involved by helping to keep the dispensers filled up and it’s a really way of encouraging people to think about their community and helping each other.”

The girls now plan more fundraising and beach litter picks and will compete in an international pageant in Barcelona in May.
