THE Welsh Government’s job is to support the people of Anglesey’s ambition for safeguards to be in place as the Wylfa proposal goes forward, according to the First Minister Mark Drakeford.

He was speaking immediately prior to a Welsh Government cabinet meeting held in Llandudno Junction on Thursday February 21.

This was only the second time the cabinet has met in North Wales, the previous occasion was in 2011.

Mr Drakeford, who in the past has been reported as being sceptical about nuclear energy, said: “People on Anglesey tell me how important Wylfa has been to them. Our job in the Welsh Government is to support them in that ambition and to make sure as a proposal for nuclear energy goes forward, all the safeguards are there to make sure the long term future of other industries and other possibilities on the island are protected as well.

“That’s why we will continue to take part in the development process to see whether we can bring this to a successful conclusion.”

He added: “The company has agreed to complete the process of development content orders that a major effort by the company, by the Welsh Government, by the local authority so there were plenty of things to talk to Horizon about today in the short run.

“Of course, in the long run the future of Wylfa will depend upon the UK Government’s energy White paper which is promised this summer and to see whether that is sufficient to bring the company back to table.”
