AN APPEAL to help Wrexham AFC football legend Mickey Thomas in his cancer battle has surpassed its intended target.

Thomas, 64, announced that he was beginning treatment after receiving the diagnosis in January.

A crowdfunding page which was set up to support Thomas, has now gone beyond the £20,000 target and currently stands at £20,195.

Thomas said on Twitter last week: "Hi everyone, today is the day I start my treatment and my fight back against the big C.

"I aim to beat this in 90 minutes with no extra time and penalties.

"I have been blown away by the love, kindness and support I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart."

The page has also been inundated with overwhelming messages of support including from Tim Edwards who said: "Micky is a football icon but, at the heart of it, a thoroughly decent human being."

Thomas made 264 appearances in two spells for the Reds and scored one of the most memorable goals in FA Cup history as his stunning free-kick was the catalyst to a huge Third Round upset as Wrexham came from behind to beat Arsenal in 1992.
