PATIENTS with long-term lung condition are benefitting from new exercise equipment at a Holyhead hospital.

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation group at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley have received a new recumbent exercise bike thanks to a donation from Horizon Nuclear Power.

The donation was initiated by patient Rita Ashworth who praised the hospital team who helped her manage her diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

She said: “I attended the group for around seven weeks and I saw they were in need of a few bits of equipment so I spoke to my daughter in law who works for Horizon Nuclear Power to see if they could help.

“I really wanted to give something back after all they have done for me, they really are such a lovely team and they help so many people.”

The Pulmonary Rehab team offer a physical exercise programme designed for people with lung conditions which helps patients look after their body and offers advice on managing their condition, including feeling short of breath.

Caerwyn Roberts, a Senior Physiotherapist from the Pulmonary Rehab Group, said: “The bike will be very beneficial for our patients as it allows them to work on their exercise endurance in a comfortable and supported seating position.

“As keeping active and maintaining fitness is an essential part of the rehabilitation for this patient group, having quality equipment to facilitate this not only increases patient motivation within classes but also increases their confidence and familiarity in using such equipment.

“We are extremely grateful to Horizon Nuclear Power for this generous donation which will benefit so many of our patients.”

Samantha Richardson, from Horizon Nuclear Power, added: “We’re delighted to have helped this project through our Community Investment Scheme as it works to improve local people’s health and confidence. Its goals mirror our own values here at Horizon and we wish the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Group every success.”
